OUR JOURNEY
Puckett Bros. Paving Co. (c.1963) began operations in Lithonia, Georgia, as a paving contractor by brothers Richard and Otis Puckett. They built the “self-propelled asphalt spreader” (c.1969) (United States Patent 3,874,807 April 1, 1975). This small paver, built in the family barn, came to revolutionize the asphalt paving industry with its efficiency. Jack Morgan from Newton County, Georgia, bought the first paver Richard and Otis ever sold.

One of the first of many innovations Richard and Otis Puckett conceptualized was the addition of an engine driving a hydrostatic pump, which allowed the old “drag box” to become a paver that moved and controlled functions that had only been available on big “highway pavers”. This became what is now known as the “power box” asphalt paver.

Puckett Bros. was the first to use hydraulics to drive the wheels, allowing the paver to be more maneuverable than anyone could have imagined at the time. Additionally, the “exhaust-heated screed” provided an easy, trouble-free way to heat the screed before and during the paving process. After seeing a specific need of a potential customer in Florida, Richard Puckett installed tracks on a PB3 paver. That is when the T400 was born. The T450 followed shortly afterwards, featuring an enclosed gearbox for the drive system, contrary to the exposed drive chains of previous models (PB1, PB2, PB3, and T400).
The concept for the PB Grader predates the asphalt paver; the late Richard Puckett envisioned a more efficient platform for preparing the jobsite. He took their wheeled loader with a rear box scarifier (c.1965-66) and installed a hydraulically controlled blade under the belly of that wheeled loader. This became affectionately known as “Alice” and was the predecessor of the “Puckett Utility Grader” (P.U.G.) in 1974.
Since its inception, Richard Puckett of Puckett Bros. Mfg. Co., Inc. has been advancing the paving, grading, and concrete industry. While Otis Puckett moved on to pursue a different path in 1976, Richard kept Puckett Bros. Mfg. Co., Inc. (PBMCI) and continued with his innovations. Since then, the T450, R450, T650, T650B, T655, T650C, T450B, and 682/692 pavers; the P.U.G., 510, 510B, 510C and 510D PB Graders, the S240 and S240D rollers and the SF820D, SF820E and SF850 concrete curb machines were developed.
“PBMCI” is back to where it all started for us, building quality, dependable equipment that minimizes downtime and maximizes profits for your paving business.
We reintroduce ourselves as Puckett Bros., llc. led by J. Richard Puckett, Sr’s son, J. Richard “Rip” Puckett, Jr., We are restoring and continuing the Puckett Bros. legacy.
